How to earn money on Instagram in India, even with a small following

The honest version: what pays, what does not, what the taxman expects and which "opportunities" are scams.

You do not need a million followers to earn from Instagram in India. Brands increasingly want small, local, believable accounts, because the people who follow you actually listen to you. What you do need is a clear idea of where the money comes from, the discipline to label paid posts, and enough sense to spot the scams aimed at new creators.

This guide covers all three, based on how paid campaigns really work on the ground.

Short version: the fastest route for a small account is paid brand posts in your own city. Keep your PAN and bank details ready, label every paid post #Ad, never pay anyone to "get you brand deals", and never share your Instagram password.

Six ways Indian creators earn from Instagram

1. Paid brand posts and campaigns

A brand pays you to post its creative or make content about its product. This is the biggest income source for most creators. Traditionally you had to find the brand, pitch, negotiate and then chase payment. Marketplaces like Adlly for creators flip that: brands book your city and audience, the offer appears in your app with the payout shown, and you accept or decline.

2. Barter and gifted products

Free products in exchange for a post. Fine when you are starting out or genuinely want the product, but it does not pay rent. Gifted posts still need an ad label, and in India gifts above a threshold can also have tax consequences (see below).

3. Affiliate links and promo codes

You earn a commission when followers buy through your link or code. It works best if your audience already shops online and trusts your recommendations in one niche, such as skincare, gadgets or fitness gear.

4. User-generated content (UGC) for brands

Some brands pay creators to make videos or photos that the brand posts on its own pages or uses in ads. Your follower count barely matters here. Your ability to make good content does.

5. Selling your own products or services

Home bakers, makeup artists, tutors, trainers and designers often earn more from customers who find them on Instagram than from any sponsorship. Your account works as a shop window.

6. Local business promotions

Cafés, gyms, salons, coaching centres and shops in your city want local reach. A creator whose followers are mostly from Indore is worth more to an Indore café than a national account, and that is where small creators win.

How many followers do you need?

Less than you think. What matters to brands:

  • Where your audience lives. Local brands book by city.
  • Who they are. Age, gender and interest group decide whether you fit a campaign.
  • Whether they are real. Bought followers and engagement pods are easy to detect and get accounts removed from serious platforms.
  • Your category. Food, fitness, fashion, beauty, tech, education, travel or local lifestyle. Be clearly one or two things.

Adlly has no minimum follower count to sign up. Offers depend on which cities and audiences brands are booking, so a small account in the right city does get paid campaigns.

Get your account ready for paid work

  1. Switch to a professional account (Creator or Business). You get insights, and it is needed for publishing through Instagram's official API.
  2. Make your bio clear. Your city, your niche and a way to contact you.
  3. Post consistently in one niche. Brands want to know what they are getting.
  4. Keep your PAN, bank account and UPI ready. Legitimate platforms verify identity (KYC) before paying you.
  5. Clean up. Remove fake followers and stop using follow-for-follow tactics. They hurt your reach and your credibility.

The rules: #Ad labels and tax

Always label paid posts

Under ASCI guidelines, any post where you have a "material connection" with the brand must carry a clear label such as #Ad, #Sponsored or #Collab. That includes money, free products, discounts and trips. The label must be upfront and easy to see, not hidden among 20 hashtags. Read our full explainer: ASCI influencer guidelines, explained. On Adlly, the caption you are given already carries the label, and removing it fails verification.

Influencer income is taxable

  • Money earned from brand posts is income and goes in your income tax return.
  • Platforms and brands may deduct TDS before paying you. Keep your PAN verified, because without it a higher deduction rate applies by law.
  • Under Section 194R of the Income Tax Act, a business giving you products or benefits worth more than ₹20,000 in a financial year may have to deduct TDS on them, even if you kept a free product.
  • If your total earnings cross the GST threshold, you may need GST registration. Speak to a chartered accountant once your income becomes regular.

Adlly deducts TDS where the law requires it and issues a downloadable TDS statement in the app for your return.

Scams that target new creators

If you are starting out, expect these. Walk away from all of them:

  • "Pay a registration fee to get brand deals." Real platforms do not charge creators to receive offers.
  • Anyone asking for your Instagram password. Legitimate tools connect through Meta's official login screen and never see your password.
  • "Buy our follower package to qualify." Bought followers get accounts flagged and removed.
  • Fake brand DMs with links. Phishing pages that look like Instagram's login steal accounts. Check the sender and never log in through a DM link.
  • Payment "after the campaign ends" with no written terms. Many creators never get paid. Prefer platforms where the brand's money is held before you post.

How earning works on Adlly

  1. Sign up on the Adlly Android app with your mobile number, add your city, category and audience details, and complete KYC.
  2. When a brand books your city and audience, the offer appears with the creative, caption, platform, posting window and the exact payout.
  3. Accept what you like. Post it yourself with a screenshot, or let Adlly publish Instagram Feed and Reel posts through the official API at the time you choose.
  4. Once the post is verified, the payout lands in your Adlly wallet. Withdraw to your bank account or UPI.

The brand's budget is held in escrow before the offer reaches you, so the money is already there. Adlly's platform fee is charged to the advertiser, not taken out of the payout you were shown. Full details are on the creators page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I earn from Instagram with 1,000 followers in India?

Yes, especially from local brands and city-targeted campaigns, where where your audience lives matters more than its size. Earnings grow as your audience and consistency grow.

Is it safe to connect Instagram to an earning app?

It is safe when the app uses Instagram's official login and API. You sign in on Meta's own screen, the app never sees your password, and you can disconnect at any time. Never type your password into a third-party page.

Do I need a Business account?

For auto-publishing through the Instagram API you need a professional (Creator or Business) account. For manual posting with screenshot proof, a personal account works on Adlly.

Who can join Adlly as a creator?

Indian residents aged 18 or over with an active Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp account and an Android phone.
